The Bass was a huge part of our modern early music

More than anyone else, it was Cream who changed the face of British rock music.

They took the fusion of blues and rock pioneered by Alexis Korner and John Mayall to places where it had never been before. They employed a level of group improvisation

that was worthy of free jazz. In fact, their music had basically three layers:

a pop melody, lengthy solos inspired by free jazz,

and a propulsive rhythm’n’blues beat.By the electric Bass Guitar

They indulged in guitar distortions and dissonant solos that were shocking for an audience raised on the Beatles.

Even the soul-jazz melodies of Sunshine Of Your Love (1967) and White Room (1968), while not revolutionary,

pointed towards a more sophisticated kind of “pop” than the childish refrains of Mersey-beat.

The Bass Guitar Builds Music


Cream was the most successful of the blues revival bands, forcing British rock that at the time still fed on pop tunes, to an abrupt reversal of direction.

The Who had already given it a try, and the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds had already reformed the blues in a revolutionary way, while Bob Dylan had experimented with long topical songs on Blonde On Blonde.

But it was Cream that made the new genre happen.

Cream was the band that altered the format of the rock song: long free jams recorded live instead of three minutes of verse, bridge, and chorus recorded in the studio.It would have been way too boring without the Bass Guitar.

They sold fifteen million albums in three years, a record that made the Beatles seem like losers.

The members of this power trio, formed in the autumn 1966, were all veterans of the blues revival. Guitarist Eric Clapton was the same prodigy who revealed himself with the Yardbirds,

and who had contributed to the legendary recording of Bluesbreakers with John Mayall. Drummer Peter “Ginger” Baker, skilled at many forms of percussion, had already played, in 1960, with the Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and in 1962 with Alexis Korner and the Graham Bond Organisation.

Scottish bassist Jack Bruce had traveled some of the same roads as Baker, before joining Manfred Mann. Bruce and Clapton had met each other in the Powerhouse,

A short-lived lineup put together by John Mayall, that also included Steve Winwood at the keyboard.

With Cream these three virtuosos simply brought to fruition the experience that they developed in the London clubs,

bringing to the rock concert stage long, electric, high volume improvisations.

Cream debuted with two singles: Wrapping Paper, that belongs to the early psychedelic era, and I Feel Free, the first taste of Clapton’s solos.

Fresh Cream (Atco, 1966) was an historic event: Clapton’s high volume distortions, Baker’s acrobatic style, and Bruce’s melodic atmosphere raised ordinary and rather poor material (mostly covers, except for Toad by Baker and NSU by Bruce) to the highest levels.

The compositions of Jack Bruce take over on Disraeli Gears (1967), an album decidedly more pop and less bluesy, produced by Felix Pappalardi.

Strange Brew is a typical example of how the group could transform blues into rock for intellectuals who were tired of Beatles pop tunes.

Tales Of Brave Ulysses, Clapton’s tour de force, features the introduction of the wah-wah pedal.

Sunshine Of Your Love, a long collective delirium based on one of Bruce’s catchy and obsessive riffs,

Remains their masterpiece.

Their fame came with their concerts, which in America instituted a social shock as important as the love-ins of the hippies. Clapton, fast and incisive, Bruce, pulsating and powerful,

And Baker, loud and overflowing, created a new standard for popular music.

Bob strolls into the music store. He’s grey at the temples, wears glasses, and has a bit of a stiffness to his walk. In his eyes, a lifetime of experience. He’s been married for thirty five years. The kids have gone on to start families of their own, and Bob’s been thinking about something.

The salesman watches as he makes his way over to the bass guitars. He follows. “Can I help you find something?”

Bob tucks his hands in his pockets and motions his chin at the Jazz Bass hanging on the wall. “She’s a beauty.” I forgot how to hold one of these girls.

The salesman eases the Jazz from its perch and hands it over. Bob lifts his foot to the rung of a nearby stool and rests the Jazz on his leg. He plays a 12-bar walking line with a lot of feeling and groove.

The salesman plugs the Jazz into a floor amp and sets the dials. Bob plays more lines and the now amplified thunder shakes the floor. He`s lost in the fret board and  doesn’t hear as the salesman relates some of the features of this particular Jazz. All he hears is the thunder.

When he finishes his demo, he turns the Jazz over in his hands. “I used to play when I was younger. We did school dances, local weddings. Pop, rock, blues, swing from 60s and 70s mostly.”

The salesman asks, “Planning to take it up again?”

Bob hands back the Jazz. “Oh I don’t know. Just looking, I guess.”

“Well, you’re pretty good, man.” He gives Bob his card. “You should think about it.”

When Bob gets home, he takes out his old photo album and does a Memory Lane once-over of the guys in the band and some of their stage gigs. He really would like to play again, but the truth be told, it’s been so long and he knows he’s no Spring Chicken anymore. And anyway, what’s the point of buying a brand new Jazz Bass when he’s probably forgotten most of what he used to know? A few basslines in the music store does not mean he could still play all the songs he used to love.

But wasn’t the thunder great, though? Wasn’t it a genuine thrill to feel the floor rumbling again under his feet?

I’m almost sixty, he reminds himself. I can’t start all over again. He looks at the salesman’s business card.

Bob’s wife comes in and breaks up the reverie. “Where were you?”

He closes the album. “Just a walk to the music store.”

She sets a coffee cup next to him. “Remember, if you get to have a new bass, I get to have a new acoustic guitar.”

His heart beats a little faster. Maybe I could do this, he thinks to himself. His breathing gets quick and the adrenaline rush hits him. He  gives her a wink. “Maybe we should take lessons this time.”

She rushes from the room to grab her jacket. “Hurry up. The store closes at six!”

Fantastic condition very early release of the Made in USA Fender Bullet Bass Deluxe. E0 serial numbers began in the second half of 1979 and this bass is one of the first 200 stamped with that code.bullit1fender


The bass is in fantastic condition with a really nice setup that is low, in tune, and easy to play. Frets are in good shape and the truss rod has movement left in it and was just recently loosened (yay!). The bass has a few minor dents and dings as pictured and a small spot on the pick guard where the previous owner went for the truss.

Learning to play the Bass Guitar These days is one hell of alot easier than when I was coming up.

And we all know why  don`t We ?

Of Course We Do  :    Its The Internet Silly.

These  Days The Internet has replaced Many Music Instructors. Kinda Sad For the Music Instructors.

Because most of them studied hard  and made it through university and might even have student loans to pay,

And all musicians know making money from your talents can be brutal.

But at the same time this is about learning to play And the internet has been

Really Good for the Students. When I was coming up, Our choices were few and quite Far Apart.

You either went to a big high school That had a nice music program

Or Your Parent`s had enough income to pay for private lessons.

And I  Guess Very few Musicians  are so talented , That they easily Just picked up their instruments  and started Playing.

We Know those types don’t we?  They are called Prodigy`s And once in A While they come along.

Unfortunately most of us are not prodigy`s…..

But most people are capable of learning to play a instrument pretty easy.

And just about every level of player no matter how talented

Have at least some room for learning a little something.

And now Days The  New Musicians  have So Many options. They Can Pick from the Best musicians on the Planet.

To learn from. And any style of music they wish. 24 hours a day you can take some lessons.And They have the Opportunity to Quickly learn any style they desire.

And alot of times it is totally Free Too. Iv`e personally have picked up quite a few tricks online

That have made me a better bass player.

Some thing thats Really Helped me alot is practicing with backing tracks.


And it really has helped me to use Backing Tracks, Its just like jamming with a band, At least thru my P.A. .

Lot of times i probably would have not practiced if it were not for the fact i remembered i had these backing tracks.

Sometimes its hard to get in the mood to play when your home alone, or any other good time to practice.

But With these Backing Tracks there on my computer and its hooked to my sound system,

And my recording System All on my Computer I can control my P.A. and even my monitors

So you can easily be up and jamming in less than 5 minutes. Nothing at all to setup just grab your bass and dig in —

-to what ever you feel like playing First you got to get your Backing Tracks, And I don`t like to pay much for backing tracks ,

I try and get them free mostly,

I Get them from other musicians when i can.

Guess Im kinda cheap or maybe just Thrifty When i do have to break down and get some tracks on the run

like  I have  little time to learn some songs or some thing crazy i do know a good site .

Remember Jim Croce ? Some of you may be too young But have still probably heard his songs, What a great Musician And what a great story teller . I Really love the way his songs told very clear Stories about the people he wrote about.

For Jim Croce A Musical Career Meant Many Days And Long Nights On the road. A lot Of Out of the way College Campuses and playing in small towns. Sometimes close to 200 days a year.

On September 20 1973 in Natchitoches La.

The Small Plane not unlike hundreds he and his band used to get from gig to gig. Somehow caught a tree at the end of a dark runway. The Little plane got hung up crashed and killed the whole band. What A Sad day for music.

No Body could know what this world would be like had Jim Croce Been alive all these years. But we do know something This Man Wrote and sang some great music. In His time he had his share of great songs.

So Lets Remember Jim Croce a little.

Remember Time in a Bottle ?Operator ? Leroy Brown ? I still love those songs today. And Always will, Although when I hear this music I only Think About Jim Croce, And how sad is it he is not still here. What A GUY.

The Bass Guitar

The electric bass guitar (also called electric bass, or simply bass) is a stringed instrument played primarily with the fingers (either by plucking, slapping, popping, or tapping) or using a pick.

The bass is similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar,

But with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and usually four strings tuned to the same pitches as those of the double bass, or one octave lower in pitch than the four lower strings of a guitar (E, A, D, and G).
Since the 1950s, the electric bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass in popular music.
The bass guitar provides the low-pitched basslines and bass runs in many different styles of music ranging from rock and metal to blues and jazz.
It is also used as a soloing instrument in jazz, fusion, Latin, funk, and rock styles.

Design considerations

A wide variety of different options are available for the body, neck, pickups, and other features of the bass. Instruments handmade by highly skilled luthiers are becoming increasingly available.Bass bodies are typically made of wood although other materials such as graphite (for example, some of the Steinberger designs)  And Aluminum have also been used.
While a wide variety of woods are suitable for use in the body, neck, and fretboard of the bass guitar – the most common type of wood used for the body is alder, for the neck is maple, and for the fretboard is rosewood. Other commonly used woods include mahogany, maple, ash, and poplar for bodies, mahogany for necks, and ebony for fretboards.

The choice of body material and shape can have a significant impact on the timbre of the completed instrument

As well as on aesthetic considerations. Other design options include finishes, such as lacquer, wax and oil; flat and carved designs; Luthier-produced custom-designed instruments; headless basses, which have tuning machines in the bridge of the instrument (e.g.Steinberger and Hohner designs) and several artificial materials such as luthite. The use of artificial materials allows for unique production techniques such as die-casting, to produce complex body shapes.

While most basses have solid bodies,

They can also include hollow chambers to increase the resonance or reduce the weight of the instrument. Some basses are built with entirely hollow bodies, which changes the tone and resonance of the instrument.
Acoustic bass guitars are typically equipped with piezoelectric or magnetic pickups and amplified.
Bass guitar necks, which are longer than regular electric guitar necks, are generally made of maple. More exotic woods include bubinga, wenge, ovangkol, ebony and goncalo alves.

Graphite or carbon fiber are used to make lightweight necks and, in some cases, entire basses.

Exotic woods are used on more expensive instruments: for example, the company ‘Alembic’ is associated with the use of cocobolo as a body material or top layer because of its attractive grain.

Warwick bass guitars are also well-known for exotic hardwoods:

most of the necks are made of ovangkol, and the fingerboards wenge or ebony. Solid bubinga bodies are also used for tonic and aesthetic qualities.
The “long scale” necks used on Leo Fender’s basses, giving a scale length (distance between nut and bridge) of 34″, remain the standard for electric basses. However, 30″ or “short scale” instruments, such as the Höfner Violin Bass, played by Paul McCartney,
And the Fender Mustang Bass are popular, especially for players with smaller hands. While 35″, 35.5″ and 36″ scale lengths were once only available in “boutique” instruments, in the 2000s, many manufacturers have begun offering these lengths, also called an “extra long scale.”
This extra long scale provides a higher string tension, which yields a more defined tone on the low “B” string of 5- and 6-stringed instruments (or detuned 4-string basses).

Strings and tuning

The standard design for the electric bass guitar has four strings, tuned E, A, D and G, in fourths such that the open highest string, G, is an eleventh (an octave and a fourth) below middle C, making the tuning of all four strings the same as that of the double bass.
This tuning is also the same as the standard tuning on the lower four strings on a 6-string guitar, only an octave lower. String types include all-metal strings (roundwound, flatwound, groundwound, or halfwound), metal strings with different coverings,
such as tapewound and plastic-coatings. The variety of materials used in the strings gives bass players a range of tonal options.
In the 1950s, bassists often used flatwound strings with a smooth surface, which had a smooth, damped sound reminiscent of a double bass. In the 1960s and 1970s, roundwound bass strings similar to guitar strings became popular.
Roundwounds have a brighter timbre with greater sustain than flatwounds. Flatwounds are still used by some bassists who want a more ‘vintage’ or Motown-style sound.

A number of other tuning options and bass types have been used to extend the range of the instrument.

The most common are:
Four strings with alternate tunings to obtain an extended lower range.
Five strings usually tuned B-E-A-D-G, which provides the extended lower range of “drop tuning” or other down-tunings. Another common tuning used on early 5 string double basses is E-A-D-G-C, known as “tenor tuning”.
This is still a popular tuning for jazz and solo bass. Other tunings such as C-E-A-D-G are used though rare. The 5th string provides a greater lower or upper range than the 4-string bass, and gives access to more notes for any given hand position.
Six strings are usually tuned B-E-A-D-G-C. The 6-string bass is a 4-string bass with an additional low “B” string and a high “C” string. While much less common than 4- or 5-string basses, they are still used in Latin, jazz, and several other genres, as well as in studio work where a single instrument must be highly versatile.

Alternate tunings for 6-string bass include B-E-A-D-G-B,

Matching the first five strings of an acoustic or electric guitar, and EADGBE, completely matching the tuning of a 6-string guitar but one octave lower allowing the use of guitar chord fingerings.
Rarer but not unheard of are EADGCF and F#BEADG, providing a lower or higher range in a given position while maintaining consistent string intervals.
Detuners, such as the Hipshot, are mechanical devices operated by the right or left-hand thumb that allow one or more strings to be quickly detuned to a pre-set lower pitch. Hipshots are typically used to drop the “E”-string down to “D” on a four string bass.

Magnetic pickups

Most electric bass guitars use magnetic pickups. The vibrations of the instrument’s metal strings within the magnetic field of the permanent magnets in magnetic pickups produce small variations in the magnetic flux threading the coils of the pickups.
This in turn produces small electrical voltages in the coils. These low-level signals are then amplified and played through a speaker. Less commonly, non-magnetic pickups are used, such as piezoelectric pickups which sense the mechanical vibrations of the strings.
Since the 1990s, basses are often available with battery-powered “active” electronics that boost the signal and/or provide equalization controls to boost or cut bass and treble frequencies.
“P-” pickups (the “P” refers to the original Fender Precision Bass) are actually two distinct single-coil halves, wired in opposite direction to reduce hum, each offset a small amount along the length of the body so that each half is underneath two strings.

Less common is the single-coil “P” pickup, used on the 1951 Fender Precision bass

“J-” pickups (referring to the original Fender Jazz Bass) are wider eight-pole pickups which lie underneath all four strings. J pickups are typically single-coil designs, but because one is wired opposite to the other, when used at the same volume they have hum canceling properties.
Humbucker (dual coil) pickups, are found in Gibson, Music Man and other basses. They have two signal producing coils which are reverse wound around opposed polarity magnets.
This significantly reduces noise from interference compared to single coil pickups. Humbuckers also often produce a higher output level than single coil pickups.
“Soapbar” Pickups get their name due to their resemblance to a bar of soap and originally referred to the Gibson P-90 guitar pickup. The term is now also used to describe any pickup with a rectangular shape and no visible pole pieces.
They are commonly found in ERB basses. EMG now makes a Soapbar pickup that has both a single coil and a humbucker in the same pickup. The player switches between the two by pulling or pushing on the volume knob.

Many basses have just one pickup,

typically a “P” or soapbar pickup. Multiple pickups are also quite common, two of the most common configurations being a “P” near the neck and a “J” near the bridge (e.g. Fender Precision Bass Special, Fender Precision Bass Plus), or two “J” pickups (e.g. Fender Jazz).
The placement of the pickup greatly affects the sound, with a pickup near the neck joint thought to sound “fatter” or “warmer” (the bass frequencies being dominant) while a pickup near the bridge is thought to sound “tighter” or “sharper” (providing a larger amount of treble).
Usually basses with multiple pickups allow blending of the output from the pickups, providing for a range of timbres. Sound demos for six variations of P-J pickup settings on the Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass illustrate this concept.

Non-magnetic pickups

Piezoelectric pickups are non-magnetic pickups that produce a different tone, often similar to that of an acoustic bass, and allow bassists to use non-ferrous strings such as nylon, brass or even silicone rubber. Piezoelectric pickups use a transducer crystal to convert the vibrations of the string into an electrical signal.
Optical pickups are another type of non-magnetic pickup. They use an LED to optically track the movement of the string, which allows them to reproduce low-frequency tones at high volumes without the “hum” or excessive resonance associated with conventional magnetic pickups.
Since optical pickups lack high frequencies, they are commonly paired with piezoelectric pickups to fill in the missing frequencies. The Lightwave company builds basses with optical pickups.

Amplification and effects

Like the electric guitar, the electric bass guitar is always connected to an amplifier for live performances. Electric bassists use either a “combo” amplifier, which combines an amplifier and a speaker in a single cabinet, or an amplifier and a separate speaker cabinet (or cabinets).
In some cases when the bass is being used with large-scale PA amplification, it is plugged into a “DI” or “direct box”, which routes their signal directly into a mixing console, and thence to the main and monitor speakers.
For some recordings, the electric bass is recorded without the use of an amplifier and speakers by connecting the bass with the mixing board using a “DI”, while the musician listens to the sound of the instrument through headphones.
Various electronic bass effects such as preamplifiers, “stomp box”-style pedals and signal processors and the configuration of the amplifier and speaker can be used to alter the basic sound of the instrument.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, signal processors such as equalizers, distortion devices, and compressors or limiters became increasingly popular additions to many electric bass players’ gear.

Sitting or standing

Most bass players stand while playing, although sitting is also accepted, particularly in large ensemble settings, such as jazz big bands, or in acoustic genres such as folk music.
It is a matter of the player’s preference as to which position gives the greatest ease of playing, and what a bandleader expects. When sitting, right-handed players can balance the instrument on the right thigh, or like classical guitar players, the left.
Balancing the bass on the left thigh positions it in such a way that it mimics the standing position, allowing for less difference between the standing and sitting positions.


The electric bass guitar, in contrast to the upright bass (or double bass), is played in a similar position to the guitar; that is, it is held horizontally across the body.
Notes are usually produced by pizzicato, in which the strings are plucked by the index and middle fingers (and sometimes with the thumb and ring fingers as well) or with a pick (or plectrum).
Although the use of a pick is primarily associated with rock, picks are also used in other styles. Jazz bassist Steve Swallow uses a pick for upbeat or funky songs. Picks can be used with alternating downstrokes and upstrokes, or with all downstrokes for a more consistent attack.
A bassist usually holds a pick in a fist like grip with the index and thumb. Also, usually the wrist is used, but sometimes for tremolo picking, and artist uses the whole arm (variations are endless).
Some bassists use their fingernails to play flamenco-style, such as John Entwistle, Geddy Lee and Les Claypool. Lemmy from Motörhead is known for playing with a pick, and would go as far as to have the pick taped to his thumb prior to performances.
There are many varieties of picks available to a bassist, and usually one chooses one for comfort, or for tone. The norm, is to choose heavy picks that range from 1.14 mm – 3.00 mm (3.00 is unusual).
Picks are made with all types of material for tone preference; a fine example would be felt picks, which are used to emulate the tone one gets from fingers.
Bassists trying to emulate the sound of a double bass sometimes pluck the strings with their thumb or fingers rather than a plectrum, and use palm-muting to create a short, “thumpy” tone. Sting performs using his thumb. James Jamerson, an influential bassist from the Motown era, played intricate bass lines using a single finger – his index finger, which he called “The Hook.” Depending on where the string is plucked, different timbres are produced.
Bass guitars come in many variety`s they resemble a standard 6 string guitar in looks only,The bass is very often mis understood because of the resemblance to a regular guitar.
When actually the bass is more related to the percussion or drum section, as to which parts of the musical arrangement the bass covers. The Bass Guitar is very often under rated as far as importance to the overall
sound of the whole band. Many times its the Bass Guitar  is responsible for close to 75% or more of the total sound people hear when they hear a live band play, Equaled only by a keyboard setup .

Its hard to find a band that is playing thru amplification or electronic instruments that does not have a bass player,

Or certainly wishes they did. Many times Keyboards will double and play the bass parts for the band
Just because the Bass Parts are very hard to do without. Its said the Bass is the Glue For the rest of the band.
And every since 1951 when Leo Fender introduced the  first  Hand held Fender Jazz  Bass Guitar, Music has never been the same.
Where Rock Music would be today with out the Electric Bass Guitar, We can Only Speculate..

Now speaking of tab, Anyone who does not know what tab is,
Let Me briefly explain,Tab or Tablature it is also called.

That actually makes reading simple Tablature of musical notes Possible Online its a language sort of a way to communicate Musical Notation By using the internet.

Have you every tried to copy and paste regular music scores or notation

from a website then try to read it after you pasted it into a text editor like note pad or word?

You cannot make out even what song it is most of the time its that bad. The whole composition gets all messed up the scores and staff do not paste back properly. Its a mess.

Some Smart Musicians Came Up With The Idea Of Tab.

So some smart Musicians invented a way that would work to copy and transfer and share songs and notations online and keep it organized so it could be used.

And its known as Tab. Like Guitar Tab, Bass Tab, There are tab for other instruments also.And tab is still being refined.


Not Everybody Writes Tab The Same Way

As not all musicians write tab alike. And it can be tricky to decipher Sometimes, But its getting better as we work our way towards A Standardization of the Tab Alphabet.

And I`m confident Tab Is here to stay and Soon to be much much more Standardized.

Especially Bass Guitar Tab,Above Is a very crude drawing only to give you a
idea of 4 string bass tab.

What Tab Looks Like

As you can see the 4 horizontal lines represent the 4 bass guitar strings. And The
numbers on the lines,

Represent the number of the fret the string is to be played on or fingered on.
With the first fret next to the nut at the headstock end of your neck fret number one.

Some Tab will even have the number of finger to use on each string,
Written down below the strings.
And you would read this left to right and play it the same.

In the tab above the 4 on the G string
is your first note and the 2 on the E string is the last note in this bar or line of tab.
The zeros or 0 `s are strings to be played open No pressing on any frets.


Some Tab Will Leave You High And Dry

Some Tab can leave you high and dry, As for speed, style, rests, and tempo are often left out.
Because most Tab was written just for the internet,
And there are no common guidelines in place or conforming to any standards, a lot of Tab is written in the style of the person who jotted it down.

There for its easy to say no two tab are the same, But not entirely true.

Recent Efforts to Standardize Tab Have Begun

Recently there have been efforts to conform to a Tablature Language With common notations and recognizable punctuation’s that follow a general code or tab alphabet. This is being more and more perfected.

Tab has made it possible for musicians to share music over a very wide range
of musical abilities and levels of training.

No longer does one have to be a schooled musician to read music, And getting the tab
to popular songs is not that difficult,


However beware some recording labels have waged war on Tab

Some recording Artists, View Tab as a copyright infringement issue. And are or going to Plan aggressive action to be compensated for the use of tablature.

In My opinion if the artist already produced a lesson book with the  notation to certain
copyrighted material and it is publicly posted somewhere 

And had it for sale or planned to sell the material.

That kinda falls into a category with other owned property Its called copyright infringement

 Then I Can see Tablature could have a conflict With those copyrighted lessons.

But if it was posted like i said and it gets leaked it should not make the person

who by no act of their own stumbles across this material liable for theft,

But the person who actually did the stealing should be held accountable.

Bands And Performers Need Tab To Do Their Jobs

But when a couple of Musicians are using Tab to communicate and learn certain music,

Just so they can play a song together.

I Just see no harm in it.
If it were to be that tablature was to be outlawed or ruled a copyright infringement,

how difficult would it be for musicians to be able to correctly
play some popular songs, Because they are surely not all notated in books just waiting to be purchased.

So in my for what it is worth opinion, If you want compensation for work ,
Get The Work Done.
People are impatient and will not wait, If They Need Some sheet music,
They will get it somewhere.

You do not want to be in any part of the production companies vision when they go looking for royalties.

Does anyone recall the record industries Lawsuits,
A couple years ago when some parents of teenagers that got  caught  down loading free music online? And got sued by the production companies ,

And some people had to pay massive Fines in lawsuits claiming  pirating of songs online?
I know you don’t want that to be you.

But personally I think the production companies are a bunch of rip-off artists themselves.

Just My Opinion

This is only one guys opinion Mine. And I Have absolutely
no grounds to base my statement on .

But I Just do a lot of reading,And Recall how the big producer
Companies, Like Warner And Sony, And, Arista , Atlantic, Columbia

These Big Companies  sometimes Do Not
Treat The Original Musicians Very Well.

I have heard stories of musicians actually dying broke, And almost homeless,While the record Executives are releasing Greatest Hits After Greatest Hits of the  artists Music,

Making a bundle of money long after the contract that was paying the artist had expired.
as there is hardly no costs associated with a greatest hits album,

Just a re-release of music recorded in the past.


Get It In Writing

But for some reason the artist I was reading about had no claim to greatest hits as his contract with the producer had ran out.

But The Producer some how still had access to the music the artist made while still under contract. I Think if the Artist Got a better deal from the beginning,
The proper %  and proper time frame of the  life of the song contract,

Then they would not be so desperate, To go after every dollar they might be able to suit For. The Recording Executives are the ones Putting the Screws to the artists

Not the public. IMO

It actually helps a artists cause to have popular bands play their songs live

You Know the artist can not be everywhere doing shows,

This keeps songs in the mix and flow and keep the Songs from dying and being forgotten.

Some one hears a great song played at a show in Friday night it sticks in their head

Then by Sunday they just  might  have to go buy that C.D. and the artist makes money

And local bands need a way to get the right music to these songs, To play a song the right way.

I Cannot think there could be any Recording Stars out there that did not start out Playing Someone else s Songs.

And without access to tab we would not So easily be able to pick up these Songs. Personally as a Musician myself I Would be flattered to have local bands playing my music.

Making a couple hundred bucks playing music from 25 different groups on a given night is no way taking away from the Record Companies Or the Artist…………………….. I.M.O.

As its a Market and Money they could Not access Anyway.

Modern Pop Music How It Got Its Shape

Roger McQuinn had been a child prodigy thru out high school and he learned how to master just about any stringed instrument available, from guitar to banjo to mandolin and bass ,He could play them all and very well. So it was no real surprise that he went right after a musical career directly out of high school

Being A Born and raised Chicagoan. Roger Studied at the Old Town School Of Folk Music. And being very active on the Chicago folk music scene.

He Quickly Made A name for himself as a avid and possibly Great Stringed instrument player.

He Had mastered the guitar banjo, mandolin. Starting as a teen age who idolized The Music of Bob Gibson.
Roger Excelled at his music a true musician.
No surprise Just Days After Graduating High School

He Was Standing On A Stage in California Playing With The Lime liters As Their Guitar And Banjo Player.
Music Was All he wanted, Day and night.

Roger Played On The lime liters album “Tonight In Person” at age 18 . Soon he was to join The very popular and red Hot “Chad Mitchell Trio”
And Recorded with them  Another album in 1961.
Called “Mighty Day On Campus” And he is  Still not old enough to legally drink. Roger is making a name for himself and starting to meet alot if people in the music business, Experiences he would learn to use as a advantage, In this business.

Then a surprise earned break came his way, When he ran into and got to meet “Bobby Darin” And Darrin convinced Roger to move to New York And Go To Work For His publishing co. “T.M. music”

T.M. Music was located in the music famous “Brill Building”. in New York City, This is where the biggest stars in the music and film business would be present on any given day or night, Were talking The Beatles, Clapton, Rolling Stones and Jeff Beck, huge players from across the pond.
And Roger Soon adjusted to being a staff song writer.

He And Another T.M. Music writer “Frank Gari” co wrote
“Beach Ball” And They even performed it live with Bobby Darin
and billed themselves as “The City Surfers” And They Put Out A single thats very rare in July 1963…

Working in New York had its advantages especially working in the famous Brill Building, Where Rodger Saw and Heard Live the sounds of The Rolling Stones And The Other big act from across the pond The Beatles.

After hearing the “Beatles ” live right at the Brill Building.
Roger was deeply inspired with what he heard.

And he knew he just had to somehow pick up and learn to play that special sound.
Soon he was gigging in all the coffee houses in Greenwich
village, With A folk Song lineup but playing it to this new rock beat. That He heard from the 4 from England.

His New style of mixing folk with the new rock music .
did not please everyone.

The Die-hard Folk Music Purist were
totally offended. And Let It Be well known.

And the less than warm response really got to Rodger, And he began to rethink his desires to perform at all. Deep down Roger knew he was onto something big, But this New York folk crowd just would not offer any encouragement.

But Roger was head strong for this new sound. So he bravely
Packed it up and off to L.A. he went.
and soon landed some work at the “Troubadour” in Hollywood.

One night after Roger opened A set for uprising star”Hoyt Axton” Gene Clark Came Backstage and praised his great style and new found musical blend, Back Then The Traditional Music of the day was any thing but rock. Mostly centered around the folk genre,Back then people had not been exposed to very much rock n roll yet but things were heading for change.

And Roger had found a way to blend traditional ” Folk Americana” with the very new and yet Misunderstood Rock music For a sound that would forever shape music as we know it. Today it would be called Rock a billy or just country rock.

Soon “Gene Clark” caught the same rock bug. And He and Roger started writing songs together. They Did Most Of Their
work at the folk den of the Troubadour And played gigs as a duo. Trying out their new compilations on the nightly folk music crowd that frequented the place.

Another singer songwriter was hanging out at the Troubadour In The mid sixties his name “David Crosby” And Crosby Quickly took to the rock bug too…Crosby joined in and they called themselves the Jet Set

And Started Gigging around L.A. and writing with Roger And Gene on a regular basis, And Crosby added a unique Pleasant Harmony To The Trio, And Before a couple months went by

The Trio Had Developed their own unique sound that was heard by the same listeners the same folk music crowd but now becoming
popular by this same fickle crowd. And The Core group of players is now in place, For what would become the Byrds.

Success Is Around The Corner

The trio decided to get serious With this new sound, The fan base demanded more. So They decided to expand the trio to Five, They first recruited Conga drum player Michael Clarke

Only because he had a physical resemblance to 2 of the “Rolling Stones” Another very popular group from England.

Next It Was “Chris Hillman”a mandolin player who was asked
to join the group but he had to learn the “Bass Guitar”A Adjustment he gladly accepted.This Band was called The “Beefeaters”. But not for long more changes on the way.
It was right around Thanksgiving 1964

The Five decided to change the band name to “Byrds” and by January 1965 a new legend was born.

They signed with Columbia records And put out a immediate hit. Written by Bob Dylan, It Was Called “Mr. Tambourine Man”
And It Went No. 1 . Followed By Turn Turn Turn a song written by Pete Seeger Went to number 3, and  Many More  hits were piling up but trouble was just ahead.

By 1967 there was increasing tension between the band members, McGuinn and Hillman becoming irritated by what they saw as Crosby’s overbearing egotism and his attempts to jockey for control of the band. In June, when The Byrds performed at the Monterrey Pop Festival

Crosby sang the majority of lead vocals, and to the intense annoyance of the other members gave lengthy speeches between every song on the JFK assassination and the benefits of giving L.S.D. to “every man, woman and child in the country.”

He further irritated the band by performing with rival band The Buffalo Springfield filling in for Neil Young.

His stock within the band deteriorated even more following the commercial failure of his first A-side song, “Lady Friend”, released in July (US #82).

By October, during the recording of the fifth Byrds album, Crosby refused to participate in taping the Goffin-King number “Going’ Back” in preference to his own “Triad”, a controversial song about a menage a trois.

These Incidence And A Few More Blowups During Recording Sessions In The Studio
Were Effective In Getting David Crosby A Pink Slip, Yes He Was Officially Fired From The Byrds In Early 1968.And Singer Song Writer Gene Clark And Drummer Michael Clarke had left on their own.
This Left Just Roger Mcguinn And Chris Hillman

In 1968 McGuinn And Co founder Hillman hired Gram Parsons and together they headed for Nashville where they recorded the famous “Sweet Heart Of The Rodeo”

This Group of players Including Roger McGuinn, Gram Parsons, , Chriss Hillman,And Hillmans Cousin The Drummer for Ry Cooder Kevin Kelly.

This was the lineup for the now famous Sweet Hearts Of The Rodeo.
Gram Parsons Did Most Of The Lead Vocals On The Original Mix,

Only To Be Remixed With Roger Mcguinn Singing After It Was Discovered That Parsons Was Under Contract With Another Label At The Time And Could Not Partake In Such Recordings

Although the music was slow to catch on in either the rock crowd because of its twangy sound, Or The country crowd because of the long hair of the performers. So This Music Hardly Made It Out Of The Gate At First.

But has since that time turned into the iconic bench mark for the country rock class and propelled Parsons to be the King Of alt Country Music.

In 1973 Roger McGuinn disbanded the Byrds to pursue his dreams of a solo career. He Went on to record 5 albums for Columbia Records. But in 1978 Roger rejoined old pals
Gene Clark And Chriss Hillman This Time For Capital Records

They Called Themselves McGuinn,Clark, Hillman and they released their debut album in 1979. The Band Did Quite Well
Performing A lot of television gigs and doing a lot of old Byrds material along with the new capital records stuff.

They did a follow up album and was to be named “City”
But Gene Clark was getting unreliable and wasn`t happy with the way the groups music was heading so he decided to take a lesser role in the second album and in the band in general.

So there was a second album but it was titled not “City”
but ” Roger McGuinn And Chriss Hillman with Special Guest
Gene Clark.”

By 1981 Gene Clark had moved on And McGuinn And Hillman continued to tour.
For A brief amount of time.

We are starting to get a picture of how American folk music mixed with British Rock sound to get what we know as traditional Country

Rock now days and these important players in how our music got its shape. They Of Course at the time did not know they were actually helping shape modern American music.

But That`s how things happen ,First with a little shock from the unknown rock and Then a little mixture of more staple music like folk music
And wham o country rock or folk rock is born.


Another good example is Elvis he had a big back ground in gospel and really listened to a lot of southern black music of the era, and got big influences in the southern style black folk music, 

That was the hidden secret  around The southern Tennessee and northern Mississippi  cities like Memphis and Elvis took that another step and mixed it with the rock that was being played by the British invasion ,

And This rock that the brits were playing was no more pure brit than it was American ,

Because the British bands had actually for most part stole the sound from New Orleans Jazz Players and labeled it The Blues,

But whoever copied who in the end the Folk sound And The Blues

Got Married and it Produced Rock N Roll Or  American Pop Music. And a whole new era in music was born inside of 10 years.

And in reality that’s how modern American Music Got it`s shape.

And they really are good instruments now,
 Was not always the case.
Another Junior Brand is The Epiphone, They are designed
To look and play like The Gibson`s.




When I say junior brand ,That is just my word,
These are full size legit Bass Guitars, That play and look like their
Big brothers. In-fact many Pro Musicians are using these bass`s exclusively.
They are that good.
And of course you should consider any brand of Bass you happen to like.
