The Precision Bass Guitar

When we think Bass guitar probably no other bass enters our mind more than that ole standby the American Fender Precision Bass Guitar,

After all this iconic instrument is what started all of us bass players wanting to Thump Those strings.

Although many of us might not know it, The American Precision Bass Guitar was in fact the very first electric bass guitar you could hold like a guitar and play the bass notes in key and in tune with the rest of the band.

It was 1951 and Leo Fender brought his new baby out in the public,. At that time options for bass players consisted of  usually sharing a very expensive upright bass viola that was huge to lug around, And so expensive that sometimes 3 to 4 bands shared the same instrument.

We all know this could not be very productive for the Bass Player or the band as a whole. And after listening to several Musicians especially bass players Leo Fender decided to do something about it.

It did not happen overnight , After  much experimenting over about 1.5 years finally in 1951 it was born The Fender Precision Bass Guitar.

The first version of the Precision Bass Guitar was crafted to match the look of Fenders ever growing popular Telecaster 6 String electric Guitar.

But then in 1954 the New look Fender Precision Bass Guitar arrived, This new look sported Contoured edges, To make it fit closer to the body and be more comfortable to play.

Then in 1957 the Stratocaster electric guitar came out, And the new look Fender Precision Bass was introduced that resembled the new guitar model stratocaster.

This new look had a rounder neck, A Aluminum Gold Anodized pick guard was put on with 10 screws. Also at this time the single split pickup was added This pickup which resembled two pickups with staggered pole pieces is still standard equipment on today’s P Bass`s.

In 1959 a glued-on rosewood fingerboard featuring “clay”-style dot position markers replaced the 1-piece maple neck and remained standard.

Until In 1966/67, when the Fender company began to offer a option of, A laminated maple fingerboard capped on a maple neck.

Rosewood fingerboards were then made of a thin veneered Material , round-laminated piece of wood and pearloid dot markers replaced the “clay”-style inlays introduced in 1959.

In 1960 the aluminum pick guard was replaced with a 13-screw celluloid design having 3 or 4 layers of black, white, mint green,

Aged white pearloid or brown “tortoise-shell”). In that same year  Just nine short years after The Precision Bass  made its appearance the newly designed Fender Jazz Bass was released.

The rest is History

And Today I want to look at a couple of these iconic instruments that had a very big role in changing the way music sounds today.
